Leprino Foods
Leprino Foods is the realization of the hard work and dreams of Mike Leprino, Sr., who in 1914 arrived in this country with little knowledge of the English language, 7 cents in his pocket, and a strong desire to succeed. In 1950, he designed and implemented plans for his own cheese making operation. With the help of his family, he began manufacturing small quantities of ricotta and mozzarella cheese for delivery to local grocery stores.
Expansion of the company began in the early 1960's when Jim Leprino, the youngest of five Leprino children, decided to recruit professional cheese makers and managers to help guide the growth of the Company. As a result, in 1962 Leprino Cheese Company was incorporated.
The Ravenna Leprino facility was purchased from DFA in the late 1990's. The Ravenna plant employs around 160 employees, with about 45% of those living in the area community. The plant processes over 1.1 million pounds of milk per day into approximately 140,000 pounds of Mozzarella and String style cheeses. Also produced are the whey byproducts mentioned earlier, Retentate or the protein from the whey and Permeate which is the sugar.
Leprino's customers include major pizza companies and food manufacturers, and food service distributors. The company believes in a results-oriented culture fostered by principled leadership, strong management disciplines, superior technology and passionate commitment to the concept of Leprino Quality. It's a multifaceted corporate culture that preaches continuous improvement and doing things right in the areas of product quality, customer service, innovation, people, ethics, and citizenship.
